The Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin is one of the quintessential maxitrails, heir to that great trail of the 80s and 90s that turns 30 in 2018 and maintains its versatile philosophy, now based on technology and electronics. It has two versions, the normal with manual transmission and the DCT, with semi-automatic transmission. In 2018 there are improvements in both engine, electronics, ergonomics, transmission and part cycle.

It incorporates a new Throttle By Wire electronic throttle, three driving modes, extended parameters of the Honda Selectable Torque Control HSTC (Honda traction control), a power delivery that improves response and a more successful engine sound thanks to a new exhaust system.

The turn signals are now self-canceling, comparing the difference between the speed of the front and rear wheels to calculate when to cancel the turn signal.

The Honda Africa Twin is a 998 cc inline two-cylinder engine that delivers 95 hp at 7,500 rpm and 98 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Technically it is a very advanced motorcycle, with the casings vertically separated and integrating an oil tank, with the water pump housed inside the clutch housing and with a thermostat integrated inside the cylinder head.

For 2018, a modified airbox improves mid-range response, as does a lighter balancing counterweight. And a lighter 2.3kg lithium-ion battery has also been introduced.

Using the TBW electronic throttle greatly expands the options available to the driver who can thus regulate delivery, engine feel and rear wheel drive. While the previous model had 3 levels of HSTC, plus OFF, the new system incorporates 7 Levels – from Level 1, for aggressive off-road driving with lug wheels, to Level 7 for the ultimate feeling of safety on wet or slippery asphalt. It is still possible to completely disconnect the HSTC traction control.

3 power levels and engine brake are also available. The three driving modes offer pre-programmed combinations of each parameter, adjusted to different environments and driving conditions:

  • Tour: use the highest horsepower (1), medium engine brake (2) and high HSTC (6).
  • Urban: uses the power (2) and medium motor brake (2) and high HSTC (6).
  • Gravel: allows the lowest power level (3) low engine brake (3) with high HSTC (6).

It also has a mode called User that allows you to combine and save the combination of power delivery, engine brake and stability control.
