The new BMW S 1000 RR
1 November, 2019 0Bogotá, September 16, 2019. – “Our fascinating plan to follow was to take the predecessor model, which has been a dominant force in all disciplines for 10 years, and significantly improve its performance. This resulted in direct objectives: a second faster on the track, more than 10 kg more weight reduction and greater ease to control the motorcycle. These objectives were taken as the basis for each decision. The result is a new and fascinating motorcycle that exceeds the objectives we set and will set the benchmark again. ” Claudio De Martino, Leader of the Vehicle Technology Team.
The new BMW S 1000 RR: even lighter, faster and easier to control.
The new BMW S 1000 RR opens worldwide at EICMA 2018. With a fully developed engine and suspension, engine power increased by 6 kW (8 hp) to 152 kW (207 hp) (in the U.S.: 151 kW (205 hp)) and a weight reduction from 208 kg to 197 kg (193.5 kg with the M package), the supercar originally launched in 2009 now enters its completely new third generation.
In addition to the improved performance, other focus points were to make the new RR at least a second faster than its predecessor, create a design that is easier to use and ensure that it offers maximum control capacity and ease of use. Whether in daily use, on winding roads or on high-performance circuits, the new RR leaves nothing to be desired. In particular, because BMW Motorrad has moved assistance systems such as Traction and Wheelie Control, ABS and Start Control on slopes to a whole new level. The same applies to the LED lighting system and the large TFT display.
Recently developed engine with BMW ShiftCam technology for improved power in the lower and middle engine speed range and increased high-end power.
With its new in-line 4-cylinder engine, now 4 kg lighter than before, the new RR reaches a completely new level of performance. For this purpose, not only was the geometry of the intake and exhaust ports optimized, but the motorcycle now also comes with BMW’s ShiftCam technology; a completely new technology for BMW motorcycles that varies valve times and valve movements on the intake side. A revised intake passage and a new exhaust system that is 1.3 kg lighter also contribute to increasing overall performance. Ease of handling and sprint capacity benefit from substantially higher torque over a wide range of engine speeds.
Completely new suspension with a more developed suspension geometry for greater driving accuracy and better handling.
Also on the side of the suspension, BMW Motorrad developers have left no stone unturned. With the aim of achieving a significant weight reduction, the engine in the new RR now has the function of greater load support than before. The requirement to design the new main frame, in addition to improving ergonomics, was to apply force directly to the engine structure through the shortest possible paths. A significant increase in driving dynamics was achieved in the new RR based on the combination of the new driving geometry, the optimized distribution of the load to the wheels and a substantial weight optimization. The new Full Floater Pro kinematics in the rear wheel suspension also contributes significantly to the noticeable increase in suspension performance. In summary, users of the new RR will benefit from better maneuverability, greater traction and even more transparent feedback in all driving states, even to the threshold limit. In summary, the new RR significantly increases the reference on the side of the suspension and, at the same time, offers greater ease of use and control. The next generation of the DDC (Dynamic Damper Control) electronic suspension is available for the new RR as an optional equipment item. Specially developed for the RR, dynamic damping control (DDC) does not require compromises in terms of tuning the suspension. This is made possible, among other things, by the new valve and control technology. In addition, a wedge package (<>) is available for selective suspension adaptation when ambitious track driving is required.
Four driving modes as standard and three more as part of the “Pro Modes” option for optimal adaptation.
For an ideal adaptation to the various conditions of use, the new RR is equipped with four standard driving modes: “Rain”, “Road”, “Dynamic” and “Race”. For those who wish to delve deeper into the world of racetracks and motor sport, the “Pro Modes” option offers three additional driving modes (Race Pro 1-3) that can be freely programmed. These allow individual adaptation of the most diverse control functions, such as dynamic DTC traction control, ABS and <> detection, as well as the acceleration curve (torque adjustment) and engine brake to adapt to the skill level and driving style of the pilot. Other features that come with the “Pro Modes” option are the Launch Control for a perfect start to the race and the configurable Pit Lane Limiter for exact adhesion to pit speeds. The ultra-fast up and down shift without the clutch is enabled by the HP Shift Assistant Pro, which comes as a standard feature.
New group of 6-axis sensors for an unprecedented level of control quality. Dynamic DTC traction control and DTC Wheelie function. ABS Pro for added safety when braking on side tilt.
The new RR is equipped with ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control DTC as standard. In addition to traction control, the DTC also includes the standard DTC Wheelie function, now as an option you can request the individually adjustable DTC Wheelie function for the first time. All control systems have been readjusted for quality and regulation characteristics. While BMW Motorrad’s partially integral ABS systems already offer a high degree of performance and safety when braking in a straight line, the ABS Pro now takes this one step further to offer greater safety while also braking in a lateral tilt position.
Multifunctional instrument panel with 6.5-inch TFT display for excellent readability and maximum information range.
The instrument panel of the new RR has also been fully developed and is now even more consistently designed for use in supercar races. In addition to a maximum range of information, BMW Motorrad developers paid special attention to ensuring that the 6.5-inch TFT display offers excellent readability, even in difficult light conditions. The objective was to offer the pilot individually customized screens for different uses. The Pure Ride screen shows all the information required for regular road use, while the three Core screens are designed for use on the race track, with the analogue speed counter (Core 1 and 2) or as a bar chart (Core 3), for example. Even more dynamic design with optimized ergonomics and attractive color combinations.
The new design of the main frame, of the Flex Frame type, has made it possible to create a much thinner fuel tank and adjustment sections for the seating area for better knee support and grip. In addition, optimized contact surfaces and a newly defined ergonomic triangle between the ends of the handlebar, the seat surface and the footrests make the ergonomics optimal. Meanwhile, the completely new fairing features ensure that the new RR is instantly recognizable as a new model. This is supported by the dynamic design that presents a combination of colors with two individual characters: Racing Red and Motorsport paint.
For the first time, BMW Motorrad offers M and M Performance Parts options for the new BMW S 1000 RR.
BMW Motorrad is successfully introducing the product strategy of the M vehicles, which now offers M and M Performance Parts options for a motorcycle. With the launch of the new BMW S 1000 RR, an M package and optional M equipment will be available at the factory for the first time. The range of products available for the new RR is also completed with a wide selection of M Performance Parts as part of the accessory program.
