Description
The AK 550 is the quintessential Kymco sports megascooter, its flagship in 2017. Overflowing with technology and design, the AK 550 proposes an alternative to elite megascooters playing on their same arguments but enhancing theirs with a more competitive price. His goal is no more and no less than to stand up to the Yamaha T-Max 530, from which he has taken the main lines of its design and concept but making a personal interpretation and even more cane and avant-garde.
The parallel two-cylinder engine is the soul of the new AK 550 and its cross-plane crankshaft shows that Yamaha inspiration that we also see in details such as the aluminum chassis. However, it also provides many new features that not only give it its own character but represent an improvement over its direct competitor. For example, it provides a good dose of extra power with its 53.3 hp, a figure that places it directly in the elite of megascooters, empowering it to reach a real maximum speed of 161.7 km / h.
The two driving modes it offers are also very remarkable; one “full power” with all the power available and another adapted to situations of low adherence that smooths the power delivery.
For the transmission, an oil-coated multi-plate clutch with a belt drive to the wheel is used, a system that seeks to minimize power losses.
The brakes have used a system as reliable as sports starring two front calipers of radial anchorage signed by Brembo that are assisted by a latest generation Bosch 9.1 ABS system. The inverted fork with 41mm bars completes the AK 550’s obvious sporty attitude. The lateral mono shock absorber in a horizontal position is another of its features and seeks maximum dynamic efficiency without sacrificing comfort.
Beneath its seat located just 785 mm from the ground, there is ample space for a full-face helmet and some other objects; It is an aspect where it has not been able to improve what the Yamaha T-Max 530 offers.
Full LED lighting system, heated grips, three-position adjustable dome, seat opening with electric motor or ergonomic 3-position adjustable lumbar support are flashes of first-rate equipment that put the AK 550 in a position to compete with any twin-cylinder megascooter.
In addition, Kymco has provided it with a total connectivity system between smartphone and scooter that catapults it to a technological level unknown in the market. It is called Smart Scooter Revolution and it integrates under a technology called Noodoe much of the useful information that the smarphone can give us through the geolocation system in a totally new and attractive way, arranged on the central spherical screen. Traffic, weather, the nearest gas station, the best route … and even stopping at a traffic light notifies us of missed messages or calls. It also interacts with social networks and even locates the scooter if we are a little confused.
