2019 R 1250 GS

The new BMW R 1250 GS – Fascination for travel and touring in a new drive dimension.

For more than 35 years, the boxer motor has been a reliable propulsion in the BMW Motorrad GS and RT models when it comes to long touring, long journeys or simply enjoying a weekend getaway on two wheels. For more than 25 years, BMW Motorrad has been committed to the four-valve technique, combined with electronic fuel injection and catalyst technology to obtain the maximum power and torque development, with the highest efficiency and respect for the environment.

Description

Boxer engine developed with BMW ShiftCam technology for increased power across the entire rev range, reduced consumption and emissions, as well as optimized smoothness of operation and rolling comfort.

With the fully developed boxer engine, the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT not only achieve a new level of power and torque. Especially in rolling comfort and smooth running – particularly in the low rev range – there was room for much improvement. In addition, the new propeller achieves better fuel economy and emissions and thrills with an especially pleasant sound spectrum. BMW’s ShiftCam technology involves the first use in BMW Motorrad series engines of a technique to vary valve timing and valve stroke on the intake side. In addition, the intake cams were configured such that asynchronous opening of the two intake valves occurs, leading to a more powerful whirlwind of the incoming clean gas and thereby more effective combustion. Other technical modifications of the propeller are reflected, among others, in the actuation of the camshafts, which now takes place through a toothed chain (hitherto roller chain), in an improvement of the oil supply, injection valves with two jets, as well as a new exhaust system.

Two driving modes, ASC and Hill Start Control, as standard.

Two driving modes are available to suit the individual wishes of the driver. The automatic stability control ASC (Automatic Stability Control) provides great safety by providing the best possible traction as standard. Hill Start Control Hill Start Assist now also comes standard on both models and allows for convenient mountain starts.

Pro Driving Modes with Additional Driving Modes, DTC Dynamic Traction Control, ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro, as well as DBC Dynamic Braking Assistant (New) as optional factory equipment.

Optionally available is the ‘Pro Driving Modes’ option, which includes the additional ‘Dynamic’ driving mode, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and, on R 1250 GS, ‘Dynamic’ driving modes as well. Pro ”,“ Enduro ”and“ Enduro Pro ”. DTC allows, especially in inclined position, an even more efficient and safe acceleration. ABS Pro (in R 1250 GS part of the Pro driving modes, in R 1250 RT as standard) offers even more braking safety, even in a tilted position. The new DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) dynamic braking assistant offers added safety in braking, even in difficult situations, by preventing unintended gas actuation. By intervention in the engine control system, the actuation moment during braking is reduced and the braking power at the rear wheel is squeezed to full capacity. In this way, the motorcycle remains stable and the braking path is reduced.

Dynamic ESA «Next Generation» electronic suspension with fully automatic load compensation.

As optional equipment, with the electronic suspension from BMW Motorrad, Dynamic ESA «Next Generation», depending on the driving state and driving maneuvers, the damping is automatically adapted to the circumstances and, in addition, automatic compensation takes place in all states load. This allows the sensitive adaptation of the motorcycle to the circumstances of the ride, damping comfort and a very stable behavior are achieved.

The highlights of the new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 RT:
  • Boxer motor developed with BMW ShiftCam technology to vary valve regulation times and valve stroke on the intake side.
  • Even more force along the entire belt speed, optimized consumption and emission values, as well as smoother operation and rolling comfort.
  • More power and torque: 100 kW (136 hp) at 7,750 rpm. and 143 Nm with 6 250 r.p.m. (before: 92 kW (125 CV) at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm at 6,500 rpm).
  • Displacement increase to 1,254 cm3 (before: 1,170 cm3).
  • Asynchronous valve opening on the intake side for optimized whirlwind and thus even better combustion.
  • Camshaft drive now via toothed chain (previously roller chain).
  • Optimized oil supply and piston bottom cooling.
  • Shock sensor mechanism for optimized travel functionality.
  • The latest generation of the BMS-O engine control system and use of two-jet injection valves for even more effective mix preparation.
  • New exhaust system for optimized power.
  • Two driving modes, ASC and Hill Start Control, as standard.
  • Pro driving modes with additional driving modes, DTC Dynamic Traction Control, ABS Pro, Hill Start Control Pro, as well as DBC Dynamic Braking Assistant as optional factory equipment.
  • Dynamic ESA «Next Generation» electronic suspension with fully automatic load compensation.
  • Alongside the factory adjustable seat height (with the exception of Style HP in R 1250 GS), a wide range of factory seat height variants.
  • LED headlights for the R 1250 GS as standard and LED daytime running light for both models as optional factory equipment.
  • Connectivity: Multifunctional combination of instruments with 6.5-inch color TFT display and many standard features on the 1250 GS.
  • Smart emergency call function as optional factory equipment.
  • BMW Motorrad Special – Individualization as optional factory equipment.
  • Increased range of original BMW Motorrad optional equipment and accessories.
  • The new R 1250 GS: Travel and off-road competition in two modern basic colors, as well as two striking Style variants.
The benefits of BMW ShiftCam technology:
  • Increased torque and recoverability across the entire range.
  • Greater bearing comfort and smoother engine running in constant driving by optimally configuring the partial load cam geometry for the lower range of load and revs.
  • Significant increase in maximum performance 100 kW (136 HP) (previously: 92 kW (125 HP)).
  • Reduction of load change losses in the partial load area.
  • Idle speed reduction by 100 rpm.
  • Reduced gas emissions and optimized sound spectrum.
  • Reduction of fuel consumption compared to the predecessor by up to 4%.
